If you require a plane to use for Features or Sketches that doesn't exist as a Default Workplane or a Face, you'll have to add a Reference Plane. Here's a few things to note on how to insert planes:
Exactly between two faces (if you need to retroactively give yourself a "MidPlane")
A series of planes that are spaced by your specified dimension
An intersecting plane that goes out to a point that might otherwise not be sketchable
Axes are like Edges or Temporary Axes and have usefulness occasionally those the aforementioned items are unavailable
Helix is used primarily for making things such as Threads or Springs
Cosmetic Threads are the least cumbersome method to add threads to a Cylindrical Feature to be added to a Mechanical Drawing (for use with Manufacturers)
