A LINE consists of two points with a line between
Lines are the most common sketch entity
NOTE: There is also an imaginary midpoint between the two end points
The Line Tool is one of the fundamental tools within all of SolidWorks
Complex Geometry may be generated using only this tool
Like most things within SolidWorks, there are multiple methods of achieving the same task.
Expand the Methods below to see the most common ways of inserting a Line Entity
Scroll through the images and follow along, using the various methods
NOTE: Remember to be in the Sketch Environment before beginning one of these methods
Menu Bar→Tools→Sketch Entities→Line
LMB the Origin→Hover Mouse to the Right (snap Horizontal)→Click to Anchor Line→RMB Menu→Select (to Exit Line Command)
OTHER METHODS:
RMB Graphics Area→Sketch Entities→Line
Sketch Command Manager Tab→Line
Sketch Command Manager Tab→Line
Press the L-Key
RMB the menu bar→LMB Sketch→LMB Line
Use the Keyboard Shortcut, L to quickly get into the Line Command
If you're not already in the Sketch Environment, it will first ask you to enter the Sketch Environment
A Line in SolidWorks is defined by:
Location of the Start-Point
Location of the End-Point
Length of the Line
Angle of the Line
Two of these must be Fully Defined in order to have the Line Fully Defined
Lines also contain a hidden Midpoint which will become very useful later on
Start Point: ORIGIN
Angle: 90°
Length: Undefined
NOTE: See the BLUE endpoint of the line vs. the BLACK endpoint. This indicates that the line is NOT Fully Defined.
Start Point: Endpoint 1
Angle: Undefined
Length: Undefined
NOTE: Notice how the entire second line is BLUE because the Start, Angle, and Length are not defined
Line tool creates a line from your first click to your second click
Midpoint Line creates a symmetric line out from your first click to your second click
