2D Sketches
2D Sketches
Sketching is a fundamental process within SolidWorks (and all CAD software) that is critical to successfully model
Because a 2D sketch is required to create most 3D features, that sketch would then be a Parent to the Feature (the Feature is now a Child to the sketch)
Before a 3D Model may be generated, a Fully-Defined 2D Sketch must be generated
A sketch consists of Entities
A Square consists of four Lines that have intersecting End Points and are of Equal Length
A Circle consists of a single Arc
A Hexagon consist of six Lines of Equal Length OR a single Polygon
For this introductory course, all sketches must exist on a plane or flat face
This is probably the most common first step to any model
Menu Bar→Insert→Sketch
Pay attention to the Yellow Message in the Properties Window
LMB Plane or Existing Sketch (From Tree)

There are several indicators that you are in the Sketch Environment
Exit Sketch - This will appear on the left of the Sketch Tab
(Often referred to as Check-it-Out)
Red "L" Origin - This will replace the normal Origin
Exit/Discard Sketch - These icons will appear at the top-right of the Graphics Area
Rollback Bar - A Sketch# will appear below the Rollback Bar on the Design Tree
Editing Sketch# - This will appear on the bottom right of the Status Bar

Things to Remember:
“Exit Sketch” keeps your work (Check it Out)
“Discard” abandons them
You'll only use this if you're unsatisfied with any changes you've made
If you accidentally Double-Click outside of your sketch, it may Exit Sketch
You can delete a sketch from the design tree
NOTE: If that sketch has Children, those will be deleted as well

LMB Expand Arrow→RMB Sketch→LMB Edit Sketch→RMB Sketch Entity→LMB Delete
Discard Sketch
In this case, if you were to Exit Sketch, you’d get errors because the original Region is gone
Alternatively, LMB Entity→Press Delete Key
If your Sketch is accidentally on the wrong Plane, next to the Edit Sketch is the Edit Sketch Plane icon
RMB Sketch→Edit Sketch Plane→LMB Intended Face (beware some relations may die)
