PARAMETRICS

SolidWorks is a Parametric modeling software (unlike graphical modeling)

Each feature must be measured with a parameter

• Dimensions
  • Distance
  • Angle
• Relations
  • Equal, Perpendicular, Halfway etc.

Parametric also means that each model should be repeatable exactly whereas graphical is an artistic method

• ALWAYS: Define SHAPE→RELATIONS→DIMENSIONS (Except when you don't)

When typing in values such as the distance dimension, use the keyboard numpad and keep the following in mind:

• The number will start off highlighted so it's easiest to just start typing the entire dimension
• Numbers such as ".25." "15 6" "--185" or "12a3" do not exist and will give you errors
• Preceding zeros are not required: .125=0.125
• You may type a "-" before many numbers and it will reverse the value
• You may do math such as "1.50/2" ".125 + .375" etc.
• Fractions require less typing: "3/8" = 3 Characters while ".375" = 4 Characters
• Units are defaulted to the template settings, but in most cases you can override " 13" " " 4'3" " "16mm + 3.125in" etc.
